Engine capacity and wattage
The DuroMax XP5500EH is a small and compact portable generator. It stands at 17 inches, is 17 inches wide, and is 24 inches long. It’s relatively lightweight as well, weighing only 127 pounds. Despite its size and lightness, it does pack a decent punch.
Its 7.5-horsepower engine is sized 225 cc. When running on gasoline, it boasts of a starting wattage of 5,500 W and a 4,500 W running wattage. On propane, its starting and running wattages are 4,500 W and 4,275 W respectively.
This makes the DuroMax XP5500EH a great tool to have around during emergencies or when traveling in an RV. The amount of power that this portable generator produces is enough to let you run a refrigerator, air conditioner or heater, and a lamp at the same time. You can also use it as a dedicated generator for your well pump or sump pump.
If you need a portable generator for outdoor use or for running tools in your workshop, the DuroMax XP5500EH will fill that need nicely as well. You can run your lawnmower or pressure washer using this generator. It can also provide enough power for you to operate a 1-horsepower compressor.
This DuroMax portable generator turns on with an easy flick of a switch. Just make sure to close the choke first before you start this device. A muffler keeps engine emissions and noise level low; at 69 decibels, this generator is about as loud as a vacuum cleaner or hair blower.
Additionally, it’s highly recommended that you use SAE 10W-30 oil for this baby’s engine. This type of oil has the ideal level of viscosity that this generator needs.
The user manual also recommends avoiding engine oils with additives or two-stroke gasoline engine oils. These oils can shorten the engine life of the DuroMax XP5500EH because they don’t provide enough lubrication.
Fuel consumption
The DuroMax XP5500EH is designed with DuroMax’s very own Dual Fuel Technology. This means this portable generator model can run on both gasoline and propane. The generator’s fuel tank can carry up to 3.96 gallons of gasoline. At half-load, it can run for up to nine hours.
You can also connect this generator to a 20-gallon propane tank. When running on propane, this generator can last for around seven and a half hours at half-load.
Always make sure to check the fuel gauge before using this generator. When the fuel tank is less than a third full, the fuel gauge may not register.
The DuroMax XP5500EH tends to consume more gas when running at high altitudes. If you intend to use this portable generator at altitudes above 5,000 feet, you should ask your dealer to perform specific modifications to the carburetor.
A modified carburetor will prevent increased emissions at high altitudes. However, even alterations to the carburetor won’t be able to do anything about the decreased horsepower you will experience in such a situation.
Output
The DuroMax XP5500EH is built with DuroMax’s MX2 Technology. With this technology, you can use this generator for both 120V and 240V devices. Or, if you need just 120V, you can direct the generator’s full power to the 120V outlet with one flick of the voltage selector switch.
Speaking of outlets, this DuroMax portable generator has three: one 120/240V 30A twist-lock outlet and two 120V 20A GFCI outlets.
Ideal usage
As a standby or emergency generator, the DuroMax XP5500EH can adequately power up your lights and a few essential appliances in case you experience a power outage at home.
So, if you just need to run your fridge or air conditioning or to have a dedicated generator for your sump pump or well pump during blackouts, this portable generator will do a great enough job. However, it doesn’t have the size or the wattage to keep the electricity in your entire home running in such circumstances.
The same goes for RV camping and road trips. You can rely on the DuroMax XP5500EH to power up a small camper, but probably not a fully furnished and equipped, 70-foot RV.
However, it will look good at your tailgate parties. In such parties, you can use this generator to operate an electric stove or grill and to play music on your phone, CD player, or sound system.
