DuroMax XP15000E Portable Generator Review

A True Workhorse for Your Power Needs

The DuroMax XP15000E is one of the largest models in the DuroMax portable generator product line. According to its marketing spiel, this model can deliver the power of a stationary machine with the economy and the footprint of a portable. Sounds too good to be true? Or is it really worth the buy? Let’s find out.

Engine capacity and wattage

The XP15000E definitely has the capacity to live up to its hype, thanks to its hardworking, 713-cc, 23-horsepower engine. This baby can crank up a starting wattage of 15,000 W and a running wattage of 12,000 W. This means you can pretty much power most of your home appliances, even the heavy-loading ones, at the same time. You can plug in your central air conditioning, space heater, fridge, freezer, electric stove, TV set, and many others without a hitch.

This DuroMax product is no lightweight, though. It measures 33 inches high, 35 inches long, and 24 inches wide. Plus, it weighs 349 pounds. While it’s not always easy to lug around, it does come with a wheel set and supposedly never-flat tires. These two features can make moving this item from place to place a much simpler process.

Just like its twin, the DuroMax XP15000EH, the XP15000E requires a key to start. You only need to turn the key to get this generator going; it’s just like starting your car. The engine also has an alternative recoil start. To keep the engine running smoothly for as long as possible, it’s important that you follow the breaking-in process described in the user manual. This process involves changing oils a few times before using it. DuroMax recommends using SAE 10W-30 engine oil for all its generator models because it has the ideal viscosity.

One of the few major differences between the XP15000EH and its twin is that the XP15000E is much quieter. With a noise rating of 74 decibels, it’s just as loud as a hair dryer. You can have a conversation even while standing near the generator, and it won’t bother your next-door neighbors unless they’re really sensitive to noise.

Fuel consumption

The XP15000E is a gas-powered generator. Its tank has enough space for 10.8 gallons of gasoline. With this amount of fuel, you can expect this machine to run continuously for almost nine hours. It’s EPA- and CARB-compliant, so you can buy and use this product anywhere within all 50 states.

Please take note, however, that this model tends to eat up more fuel and produce more emissions when used at a high-altitude location. If you intend to use this machine at high altitudes, you’ll have to ask your dealer for a modified carburetor to address these issues. The modified carburetor will slow down the unit’s gas consumption, minimize emissions, and maintain compliance.

Output

The variety of outlets you’ll find on the XP15000E’s control panel grants you range when it comes to the appliances and tools you can plug in. You have seven outlets available: four 120V 20A GFCIs, one 120V 30A twist lock, one 120/240V 30A twist lock, and one 120/240V 50A heavy duty. The control panel also has a circuit breaker and a meter that will help you keep track of your voltage, usage, and maintenance hours.

Ideal usage

The DuroMax XP15000E is designed to perform as a high-capacity generator for situations that require heavy power demands—whether as a backup power supply, as a workhorse for your jobsite, or as the main source of power for your campsite. As long as you keep it properly fueled and in good working order, you can rely on it to supply continuous electricity to your major appliances at home or your tools at work. You can even plug many of these appliances and tools at the same time, as long as you keep a close eye on your surge and running wattage.
