Engine capacity and wattage
The XP10,000E is a monster of a machine—40 inches long, 27.5 inches high, 29 inches wide, and weighing a hefty 260 pounds. Its engine size is 457 cc and boasts of 18 horsepower. Does this generator deliver the kind of power that its size promises? The answer is yes. With 10,000 W surge wattage and 8,000 W running wattage, it can pretty much power up your whole house.
This means more than just keeping your lights and refrigerator on. You can also plug in your air conditioner or space heater if you need to. You can cook with your electric stove or oven, or do your laundry with your washer and dryer. You can even watch TV or use your computer if you want to. Just make sure that you don’t run all your heavy-loading appliances at the same time. As big as this DuroMax model is, it still has its limits.
Can you call the XP10000E a true portable generator? Of course, you can. You can move it around despite its size, thanks to the wheel and handle kit that comes with the package. Its wheels are supposedly never-flat, though you do have to shift its position every now and then so they don’t develop flat spots.
Another great thing about this genset model is it’s a lot quieter than you may expect. Its noise rating is pegged at 72 decibels, about as loud as a hairdryer or a dishwasher. But it feels a little quieter than that. You can have an audible conversation while standing near this unit as it’s running. And unless they’re sensitive to noise, your family and your neighbors can sleep through the sound this generator produces.
The XP10000E is an easy-start unit. It only takes a flip of a switch or a pull of the crank to get it working. To keep the engine running smoothly and to make it last as long as possible, you should keep it oiled with SAE 10W-30 engine oil. Its viscosity makes it ideal for DuroMax engines. Other types of oil are too abrasive.
Fuel consumption
This DuroMax product relies on gasoline to function. Its fuel tank can hold up to 8.3 gallons. At half-load, this machine can run continuously for almost 11 hours. It can go on idle mode if it’s not in use. This feature conserves fuel, not to mention engine life.
If you intend to use this model at a high-altitude location, though, you need to keep an eye on your gas tank. This genset guzzles more gas yet loses some of its power at high altitudes. You can correct this by asking your dealer to fit it with a modified carburetor. This modified carburetor can minimize emissions and prevent the generator from losing horsepower.
Output
You can plug almost any appliance or tool to this DuroMax portable generator. It has five outlets, namely two 120V 20A GFCI outlets, one 120V 30A twist-lock outlet, one 120/240V 30A twist-lock outlet, and one 120/240V 50A heavy-duty outlet. This generator is designed with DuroMax’s proprietary MX2 technology, which allows you to use it on 120V and 240V at the same time. However, if you want to use just 120V, you can channel the generator’s full power to the 120V outlets. All you need to do is toggle the voltage selector switch.
Ideal usage
The XP10000E is meant to function as a backup generator. If you have this machine at hand, you can sit through a power outage even if it lasts a few days. It will keep the lights on and your essential appliances running. You can also plug in a couple of heavy-load appliances as long as the machine has enough wattage for them.
This model is also good to have around as a source of power for your worksite, as it lets you tinker about with your heavy power tools. If you live off the grid in a cabin in the woods or on the road in an RV, having this machine around can make your life more comfortable in the only way electricity can.
However, if all you want out of the XP10000E is to have something to use for your tailgate parties, you’re better off with a smaller generator.
